Hopi Coil Basket CollectionsThese exceptional Hopi Coil baskets date from the 1950's through the early 1970's. Hopi coil basketry is unique to the second mesa villages of Shungopavi, Shipaulovi and Mishongnovi. The baskets are made from split yucca coiled around a foundation of galleta grass. The colors used in coiled plaques and baskets are limited to white, yellow, green, red and black. The white, green and yellow are all natural yucca colors. The red and black are obtained by dying the yucca with plant material. Although limited by the color palette Hopi coil basket weavers produce an infinite variety of colorful and difficult designs. These designs will often depict the kachina spirits that are so important to the Hopi way of life.
