Hand Coiled and Traditionally Fired Acoma Tall-Necked Jar with Intricate Hand Painted Designs using a Yucca Brush. This jar was made by Dorothy Torivio (1946-2011), who has a very distinct style of coiling and painting her pieces. This piece was free hand painted with incredible precision like all of her pieces. Dorothy paints her pieces in the negative, which is the opposite of the way our brains first process the designs. Dorothy used to say she would do all of the math in her head before beginning a piece. She would have the entire design mapped out before she begun. Many people would have to use a computer to achieve this level of intricacy in the designs.
